How U.S. Veterans were Treated in the U.S.A.
The American veterans were treated poorly because they had a hard time readjusting to society. When they came back, many soldiers developed PTSD, and they came off as bitter and mean. These veterans eventually lost their homes, and then they started doing drugs to take their minds off their problems. Also, people were protesting against them. When they landed in the airport, they were called rude names, and they were spat on. Unlike the Vietnam War, after World War II, the soldiers came back as heroes. The Americans didn’t understand the righteousness of the Vietnam War, and they didn’t know whether to thank the soldiers or not. Also, the Vietnam War is very unpopular, and as the people tried to forget this war, they also forgot the Vietnam War veterans as well. At least 21,000 soldiers came home permanently disabled and unable to work for the rest of their lives. These veterans only got about 200 dollars a month from the government, while WWII veterans had all of their living expenses paid and received enough money for a college tuition. More than 100,000 American veterans committed suicide after the war because of pain and abandonment, which is almost two times the number of soldiers that died in the actual war.
